Athens – A four-year-old’s unexpected discovery has blossomed into a remarkable journey in the world of information technology, leading to international accolades for young Greek student Christos Vekios.
It all began when Christos, now a high school student, stumbled upon an old laptop his parents had stored away. This serendipitous encounter ignited a lifelong passion for technology. Fast forward to today, and Christos not only shines in his studies but also competes on the global stage. Most recently, he achieved 2nd place in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa division and 9th place worldwide in the prestigious Microsoft Office Specialist Championship, securing a proud spot for Greece in global rankings.
In an interview with the Athenian and Macedonian News Agency, Christos described how his passion for IT evolved. "This summer, I had the privilege of representing Greece at the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship (MOSWC) 2024, where I secured 9th place," he shared. The competition, tailored for youths aged 13-22, aims to teach essential skills in programs like Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. These skills are vital in today’s digital world, where technology is embedded in daily and professional life. The competition not only imparts knowledge but also offers exciting prizes to attract young participants.
Christos’s journey with computers began at the tender age of four, after discovering the unused laptop. Initially, he indulged in music and movies, but by ten, his curiosity deepened. He began crafting websites for friends and family, gradually becoming the resident tech expert in his circle. Eager to expand his skills, he ventured into robotics competitions, clinching a gold medal with his team and earning national and international recognition.
"I first learned about the competition by chance when I saw a news report about the silver medalist with my grandfather," Christos explained. Determined to compete, he joined a specialized training center and, within a year, climbed to fifth place in the Pan-Hellenic competition. The following year, he conquered the Microsoft Word category, earning a trip to California to face off against international peers. There, Christos secured 2nd place in his region and 9th place globally, further highlighting Greece's presence in the World Ranking. The competition also provided opportunities for cultural exchange, with Christos visiting iconic sites like Hollywood, Disneyland, and Santa Monica Beach.
Through dedication and a love for technology, Christos Vekios has not only become a beacon of talent in IT but also a source of national pride, illustrating the reach and impact of youthful innovation.
