More than 6,000 students have been suspended since the academic year began due to breaching a mobile phone ban in schools, as announced by Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis on Monday.
In an interview with Skai radio, Pierrakakis commended the mobile phone ban, highlighting its significant positive impact despite the 6,043 suspensions. He mentioned that, since schools resumed after the summer holidays, there have been 213 reported incidents of school-related violence on the stop-bullying platform, bringing the total incidents reported since April to 501.
Regarding the issue of "perpetual" university students, Pierrakakis affirmed that a 2022 law will be enforced, which limits the duration of university studies to six years. Students who exceed this timeframe will be removed from university registers.
The minister also discussed private universities, indicating growing interest from several institutions, with numerous requests for operations expected soon.
