Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis underscored Greece’s commitment to digital transformation during a meeting on Monday with Iliana Ivanova, the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth. He announced that the country is finalizing its strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI), which will be presented in the coming weeks.

Commissioner Ivanova highlighted that enhancing competitiveness will be the EU’s primary focus in the years ahead.

Mitsotakis noted that his government has been working diligently to “bridge the innovation gap” that existed when he took office in 2019. “We have made significant progress, particularly in improving the connections between citizens, businesses, and the state through digital transformation,” he stated.

He praised the gov.gr website as a transformative tool that has improved digital infrastructure and fostered a vibrant ecosystem for startups and tech companies. This effort has also helped attract back talented Greeks who left during the economic crisis.

Looking ahead, Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of the upcoming AI strategy, stating, “We want to position Greece within the emerging AI ecosystem, where I believe we have valuable contributions to make.”

He expressed interest in further enhancing cooperation between Greece and the European Union in research and innovation.

In response, Commissioner Ivanova expressed her enthusiasm for being in Athens to launch the Trusted Investor Network and the upgraded European Innovation Club Council. She described these events as significant milestones in promoting the European innovation ecosystem.

“Competitiveness is our top priority, and research and innovation are key to achieving this,” Ivanova stated. She shared her productive discussions with officials and innovative leaders earlier in the day, highlighting successful Greek companies that have benefited from the European Innovation Council as examples of addressing the innovation gap.

“I encourage Greek innovators, researchers, and companies to participate in available EU programs actively. This is essential for cultivating the innovative spirit we aim to preserve across Europe,” she concluded.
