Greece Takes Command of EU Naval Operation Aspides in Red Sea

Greece will take over the leadership of Operation Aspides, an EU naval mission launched in response to missile and drone attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Starting November 1, Commodore Konstantinos Pitykakis will become the EU Force Commander, succeeding Italian Rear Admiral Massimo Bonu.

The mission aims to safeguard shipping routes in the region, with Pitykakis leading from the Italian destroyer "Andrea Doria." The Greek Navy will also contribute its Spetsai frigate to the operation for the coming months. Defence Minister Nikos Dendias is expected to attend the handover ceremony aboard the Italian ship.

Operation Aspides has successfully completed over 260 missions, providing essential protection to commercial vessels against Houthi rebel attacks.
