Greek Seamen Extend Strike, Halting Ferry Services on October 24 and 25

The Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) announced on Wednesday that it is intensifying its strike action with a new 48-hour strike scheduled for October 24 and 25.

As a result, all coastal passenger ships will remain docked in Greek ports during these two days, following an earlier two-day strike on October 22 and 23.

The seamen are demanding the repeal of Greek Law 41/50, which permits high-speed vessels to limit their annual operational schedule to just four months, effectively classifying sailors as “seasonal employees.” Additionally, PNO is advocating for a collective labour agreement that includes a 12 percent wage increase, improved unemployment benefits for more sailors, and compensation for overtime hours worked.

In response to PNO’s demand for a wage increase, the Greek Shipowners Association for Passenger Ships (SEEN) has proposed a more modest 3 percent raise.

To further their cause, PNO has requested a meeting with Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Christos Stylianidis to discuss their concerns and demands.

Travellers holding ferry tickets for October 24 and 25 are advised to contact their travel agents or local port authorities for updates and alternative arrangements.
