Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides will travel to Thessaloniki on Friday, November 1, to participate in a series of commemorative events honoring Cypriot heritage and history.
The day’s events will begin at noon with the unveiling of the remodelled bust of Kyriakos Matsis, a celebrated figure from the EOKA independence movement. This unveiling, which will take place at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), marks a significant moment in remembering the contributions of Matsis and those who fought for Cyprus' independence.
Later in the afternoon, at 5:30 p.m., Christodoulides will serve as the keynote speaker at a memorial organised by the Society for Macedonian Studies to honor victims of the Cyprus tragedy. The gathering will commemorate the lives lost and reflect on the historical context of the conflict.
At 7:30 p.m., Christodoulides will open the "Cyprus & Romiosyni" international scientific congress as the keynote speaker. This congress, organised by the Metropolitan Church of Nea Krini and Kalamaria in collaboration with the Vatopedi Monastery on Mt. Athos, will be held in the ceremonial hall of AUTh's historic Philosophy Department building. The congress will explore cultural and historical ties between Cyprus and the Hellenic world.
Christodoulides’ visit underlines the importance of Cyprus’ shared heritage with Greece and aims to foster ongoing dialogues on historical memory and cultural connection between the two nations.
