Melbourne is set to welcome a new gem in its culinary crown as Maison Batard, a French-inspired dining establishment, prepares to open its doors on November 26. Spearheaded by Greek-Australian restaurateur Chris Lucas, the mastermind behind the Lucas Restaurants group, Maison Batard promises to bring a taste of France to the heart of the CBD.

For over eight years, Lucas has nurtured plans for this French venture, adding to his impressive portfolio of esteemed venues such as Society, Grill Americano, Chin Chin, and the recently launched Tombo Den. The much-anticipated announcement marks a significant milestone for Lucas, who expressed immense satisfaction in seeing his vision come to fruition amidst years of dedication and challenges.

Strategically located at the top end of Bourke Street, Maison Batard spans a multilevel layout, integrating three historic buildings into a cohesive space. Visitors can expect a vibrant showcase of French elegance across its four levels, complete with an extravagant oyster and crustacea bar on the ground and first floors. Guests can also explore a subterranean nighttime supper club and a stylish rooftop terrace offering sweeping city views.

Lucas emphasized the importance of preserving the site's heritage, describing Maison Batard as a "legacy project" aimed at reviving the elegance originally introduced by the Italian Society restaurant when it first opened on the premises in 1927.

The restaurant's name, Maison Batard, pays homage to Burgundy's renowned Batard-Montrachet vineyard, with "Maison," meaning "house" in French, reflecting its identity as a dining haven. Lucas, along with his wife Sarah, has meticulously curated the space, blending Parisian artwork, Milanese chandeliers, and vintage flea market finds to create an intimate and storied atmosphere.

In anticipation of its opening, Maison Batard has assembled a star-studded culinary team. Long-time Lucas collaborator Damian Snell steps in as the culinary director, with Adam Sanderson bringing expertise from prestigious kitchens such as The Fat Duck and Noma as the executive chef. Grill Americano's Michaela Kang will lead the pastry department, while Loic Avril, the wine connoisseur from Lucas Restaurants, oversees the wine program.

Maison Batard begins accepting reservations on November 7. With its blend of French sophistication and Melbourne flair, it promises to be a standout addition to the city's vibrant dining scene.
