The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy has granted temporary licenses for the establishment of five desalination plants on four Greek islands, representing a crucial advancement in tackling water shortages.
Amid ongoing water scarcity concerns, the Greek government has issued a record 25 temporary licenses for desalination plants since the start of the year. The latest licenses are designated for the islands of Alonissos, Kalymnos, Pserimos, and Telendos.
Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Stefanos Gikas emphasized the government's dedication to taking prompt action to prevent water shortages from escalating into crises on these islands.
“To effectively address the challenges posed by water scarcity and climate change, we must remain proactive and collaborate with all relevant authorities to implement targeted interventions,” stated Deputy Minister Gikas. He also highlighted that these desalination projects involve coordination between both the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
