Mr. Vasilis Panagiotaropoulos, an 80-year-old student in the third grade of middle school, participated in today’s parade with the 2nd Evening Middle School of Athens, setting a national record as the oldest flag bearer to take part in a parade.
Mr. Vasilis returned to school after retiring because, as he told a television program, “I couldn’t go to school when I was supposed to, so I decided to do it when I retired.” He holds the flag proudly and is a good student, although Ms. Pateraki, the school’s principal, noted that he has some difficulties with Ancient Greek.
“He is an excellent student, diligent and consistent, and an example for everyone—especially for the youth. It shows that in life, we set goals, never give up, and always try to achieve what we can.”
As mentioned in the program, his family supports him, and his grandchildren cheer for their grandfather today, feeling proud of him.
“Everyone you see here is hard-working, and in the evening, from 7 to 10, they come to us with their bags during their hours. They are diligent and excellent,” said Ms. Pateraki.
