Adelaide, South Australia + In what many are calling a watershed moment for the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia (GOCSA), nearly 500 members convened for a pivotal decision-making meeting. The gathering aimed to resolve issues with significant long-term implications for the community’s governance and spiritual direction.
After an extensive meeting and a marathon counting process, the results were finally revealed by the electoral committee. Despite fervent discussion and active participation from community members, not all proposed motions achieved the required support for implementation.

Motion 1: Articles 29 to 33 – Real Estate of the Association
This motion successfully passed with 63% of members voting in favor, narrowly surpassing the 60% threshold. The approval marks a significant step toward altering the management and potential utilizations of the community’s real estate assets.
Motion 2: Resignation from Autocephalic Church and New Deed with GOAA
The vote for GOCSA to resign its membership from the Autocephalic Church and enter into a new deed with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia (GOAA) did not pass. Although 61% of the members supported the motion, it fell short of the 75% needed for adoption, leaving the current affiliation unchanged.
Motion 3: Interpretation of “Orthodox Faith” and “Greek Orthodox Faith”
Similarly, the motion seeking clarity on the interpretation of “Orthodox Faith” and “Greek Orthodox Faith” did not secure approval. Despite receiving a 63% favorable vote, it did not meet the 75% requirement, forgoing any immediate redefinition of these terms.
Following the results, the Administrative Council expressed a commitment to re-engage with the membership to map out future actions. The council acknowledged the active participation of members and stressed the importance of continued dialogue to address the community’s concerns and aspirations.
“As we move forward, the feedback and perspectives shared today will guide our next steps,” said a spokesperson for the council. “It is essential that we remain unified in purpose as we navigate these complex issues together.”
The Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia now stands at a crossroads, as leaders and members alike deliberate on the future direction of their spiritual and communal life.
