Brisbane Celebrates OXI Day with a Resounding Display of Hellenic Pride in 2024

On October 28th, Brisbane City Hall, Australia, was awash with the spirit of "filotimo" as over 250 members of the Greek community and friends of Greece gathered to commemorate OXI Day. The event, a resounding success, served as a powerful reminder of the courage and resilience embodied by the historic day.

Hosted by the Honorary Consul General for Greece in Queensland, Mr George Mastrocostas, in partnership with The Hellenic Initiative (THI) Australia, the evening featured traditional music, heartfelt speeches, and a warm atmosphere of camaraderie. Distinguished guests, including His Grace Bishop Bartholomew of Brisbane, Mr John Paul Langbroek MP representing the Premier of Queensland, and His Honour Judge Nicholas Andreatidis KC, highlighted the occasion's significance. Adding international weight to the event, Mr. George Protopapas, National Director of SOS Children's Villages Greece, travelled from Greece to participate.

Who is The Hellenic Initiative (THI)

The Hellenic Initiative (THI) Australia is the Australian branch of a global non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Greece during times of economic hardship and crisis. It aims to:

Provide crisis relief: Support vulnerable populations in Greece affected by economic downturns or other crises. This often involves partnering with organizations on the ground in Greece.

Invest in entrepreneurship: Fostering economic development and job creation in Greece by supporting startups and small businesses through grants, mentorship, and networking opportunities. They want to help create a more vibrant and sustainable Greek economy.

Provide philanthropic support: Connecting the Greek diaspora and Philhellenes (lovers of Greek culture) with opportunities to contribute to Greece's recovery and future. This involves fundraising and grant-making activities.

THI Australia works with other THI chapters worldwide (like THI US and THI Canada) to maximize their impact and coordinate efforts to support Greece. They believe in leveraging the global Hellenic network to address critical challenges and promote a brighter future for the country.
