The repairs, focused on a bridge, forced the motorway down to a single lane in both directions, slowing cars to a near standstill.
With the primary route clogged, some motorists tried alternative side roads, only to find that they too were single-lane for a stretch of 20 kilometres between the Lamia and Molos junctions. The high traffic volume overwhelmed this route as well, leaving drivers with limited options to bypass the gridlock.
Compounding the issue, many drivers reported that they received no advance warning at the Mavromantila toll plazas, preventing them from diverting before the congested area. Several drivers said they spent more than three hours covering the 10 kilometres, with backups reportedly persisting past the 208th kilometre at Anthili.
