Announced on October 28, the $1.2 billion deal includes an undisclosed number of helicopters for these two European nations and additional non-EMEA Foreign Military Sales (FMS) customers. The project is expected to be completed by December 31, 2027.
This award from the US Department of Defense follows Greece's signing of a letter of offer and acceptance (LOA) for 35 medium-lift helicopters in April. In July, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk: FMV) confirmed it would acquire 12 helicopters for the Swedish Air Force (SwAF).
The Hellenic Army plans to use the 35 UH-60Ms to replace its aging fleet, which includes 20 Bell UH-1Hs, one Agusta-Bell 212, and 10 Agusta-Bell AB205s that have been in service since 1969, 1972, and 1974, respectively.
These new helicopters will enhance the army's capabilities alongside 15 NHIndustries NH90 Troop Transport Helicopters (with an additional five on the way) and 24 Boeing CH-47D Chinook helicopters currently in operation.
