A young man, aged 25, was rushed to a hospital in Iraklio, Crete, on Wednesday after sustaining second-degree burns from setting himself on fire. He remains in serious condition at the intensive care unit.
Authorities report that the individual purchased a gasoline container from a petrol station on Ikaros Avenue, a major road in Iraklio, and proceeded to self-immolate at a nearby site.
Quick-thinking passersby, reacting to the alarming situation, managed to extinguish the flames with fire extinguishers from the petrol station.
Emergency services swiftly transported the victim to the University General Hospital of Iraklio for treatment.
