Tony Nicklow, Co-Founder of Santorini, Best Steak House, Passes Away at 80

Tony Nicklow, a celebrated restaurateur in the Twin Cities and a Minnesota Restaurant Association Hall of Fame inductee, passed away at 80. Nicklow, known for his dedication to Greek-American cuisine, died on October 18.

Originally from Greece, Nicklow and his brothers Bill and Jim began their culinary journey in the 1970s after relocating to Minnesota. After graduating from Mankato State University, Nicklow co-founded The Best Steak House, a popular establishment near the University of Minnesota campus. Over the years, he expanded the brand to include multiple locations. He introduced other dining concepts such as The Shorewood Inn, Nicklow's Restaurant, Santorini restaurants in St. Louis Park and Eden Prairie, and Nicklow's Cafe & Bar.

In 2012, Nicklow was inducted into the Minnesota Restaurant Association Hall of Fame, recognizing his impact on the local dining scene. His obituary highlights his commitment to his business and customers, his warm personality, and infectious laughter.

His son, Johnny, fondly remembers his father as an outgoing and charismatic figure who connected deeply with those around him. Nicklow's hands-on approach to marketing included buying drinks for patrons at other bars to draw them to his restaurants, leading to bustling crowds the next day. He also played matchmaker, celebrating the unions of couples who met at his establishments.

Nicklow’s most recent ventures included Santorini in Eden Prairie, which operated from 2008 until its closure in 2014, and a brief revival of Shorewood Inn. He is survived by his children Tony, Johnny, and Stephan; their mother, Vangie; granddaughters Aurora and Isabell; and a large extended family.

A visitation service occurred on October 27 at the Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, followed by a funeral on October 28 at Lakewood Cemetery.
