A powerful explosion in an Ampelokipi apartment in Athens on Thursday left one man dead and a woman critically injured, prompting an intensive police investigation. Authorities confirmed that the blast was caused by an explosive device, and evidence, including firearms and digital devices, has been seized from the scene. The injured woman, known to authorities, remains in critical condition, while DNA testing will be required to identify the deceased man.
The blast caused extensive damage to the apartment and impacted nearby residences, according to law enforcement sources.
Authorities confirmed that the explosion was caused by a detonated explosive device. Evidence collected so far includes two pistols, ammunition, mobile phones, and other digital devices, all of which have been seized for further examination.
Preliminary reports suggest the deceased man may have been assembling a large explosive device in the apartment's living room. Due to the force of the explosion, no immediate remnants of the device have been found, and investigators are working to identify the type of explosive material used.
Police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou provided an update on Friday, stating that the injured woman, who remains in critical condition at Evangelismos Hospital, has been identified. Although she is currently unable to communicate, police confirmed she is known to authorities, having been previously arrested. The identity of the deceased man, however, remains undetermined due to the severity of his injuries, which Dimoglidou described as "dismembering." DNA testing will be required to confirm his identity.
The incident has raised significant concerns, and police continue to investigate all aspects of the explosion, including the possible motive and origins of the explosive material.
