Greece Extends Animal Transport Restrictions Following Sheep Smallpox Outbreak

In response to a recent smallpox outbreak among sheep, Greece‘s Ministry of Rural Development and Food has extended a ban on transporting sheep and goats intended for fattening and reproduction.

The ban, imposed on Thursday, is intended to curb further spread of the disease across the country.

While transport restrictions remain in place, the ministry has permitted the movement of sheep and goats from summer pastures, provided they undergo inspections and a mandatory 30-day stay at their destination farms. Additionally, sheep and goats can be transported for slaughter within specific smallpox-free regions, including Attica, North and South Aegean, the Ionian Islands, Crete, Western Greece, Epirus, and Western Macedonia.

The ministry has also issued strict guidelines on disinfecting facilities, equipment, and vehicles involved in animal transport. An updated epidemiological assessment from the General Veterinary Directorate is scheduled for November 8, with further directives expected based on the review.
