A tragic accident has claimed the life of a 45-year-old firefighter after his fire truck fell into a ravine in the Kotsika area of Evia.
The accident, which occurred while the fire crew was en route to prepare for fire season, resulted in a loss of radio contact, leading to an immediate and large-scale emergency response.
According to local reports from Evima.gr, the driver was found unconscious at the scene. Emergency responders quickly transported him to the Mantoudiou Health Center, where he was tragically pronounced dead. A second firefighter, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained back injuries and was also taken to the health centre for treatment.
The cause of the accident remains unknown. The fire truck reportedly veered off its path and plunged into the ravine, cutting off radio communication and sparking an urgent search and rescue operation.
The response was swift, with the Commander of the Evia Fire Department, Konstantinos Psarros, overseeing the operation. Eight firefighters with three vehicles from Chalkida and twelve firefighters with six vehicles from North Evia arrived on the scene to assist.
Authorities are now investigating the accident.
