A 36-year-old Greek national, previously arrested in Germany for protest-related violence, was identified as the man killed in a large explosion in a central Athens apartment caused by a home-made bomb on Thursday. This identification was confirmed by authorities through Europol's fingerprint database, and his parents have been asked to provide a DNA sample to assist in the investigation.
Greek anti-terrorism investigators, now handling the case, are focusing on two women linked to the incident. Both women are known for past activist activities and are suspected of being involved in the construction of the bomb, which detonated accidentally.
The primary suspect, a 33-year-old woman who sustained critical injuries in the blast, has a history of arrests, including one from a 2015 protest against Turkish Airlines. Authorities suspect she participated in anarchist-driven activities.
The second woman, also associated with anarchist groups, is believed to have facilitated access to the apartment. It is reported that she may have obtained keys from the apartment's owner, who currently resides in the Netherlands and is not considered directly involved in the incident.
In addition, a 31-year-old man was arrested Friday night for his connection to the case. He admitted to police that he shared the apartment keys with the couple involved but denied participating in the explosion. He is scheduled to appear before a prosecutor later on Saturday.
Charges against the suspects, including the two women and the recent arrestee, involve participation in a terrorist group and committing terrorist acts.
