Man Arrested After Ampelokipi Explosion to Appear in Court on Terrorism Charges

A 31-year-old man, who voluntarily reported to police following an explosion at an apartment in Ampelokipi, Athens, on 31 October, is set to appear before an examining magistrate on Tuesday facing terrorism charges.

The individual, who was arrested shortly after his appearance, will present his account of the events detailed in the indictment against him, which includes four charges related to the establishment and membership of a terrorist group as well as involvement in terrorist acts.

The defendant is expected to completely deny the charges and reiterate claims made during his questioning by anti-terrorism officers on Friday night. He was present in the apartment at the time of the explosion, which resulted in the death of a 36-year-old man who was handling a makeshift bomb.

Meanwhile, the Greek police released photographs on Monday from the evidence gathered in the third-floor apartment on Arkadias Street, where the powerful explosion took place. The counter-terrorism squad discovered a cache of items, including weapons, wigs, masks, handwritten notes, and plans for building explosive devices.

In related developments, a 30-year-old woman who held the keys to the apartment where the explosion occurred has also been brought before the prosecutor. She faces the same terrorism-related charges as her partner. An arrest warrant had been issued for her, and once processed by the prosecutor, she will be taken to the investigator overseeing the case against the terrorist organisation involved in planning an attack with a powerful bomb.

The woman was apprehended on Monday at Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" upon her return from Switzerland. Reports indicate that her lawyers had previously negotiated her surrender to the authorities.
