Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed the urgency of bridging Greece’s economic disparity with Europe while addressing local inequalities during a speech in Nafplio on Monday.

At the event  for National Strategy for Regional and Local Development, held in the Peloponnese, Mitsotakis presented his vision of “double convergence.” He underscored that Greece must not only aim to reach European standards but also address inequalities within its own regions to ensure that all citizens—from Athens to the villages of Argolid—have equal opportunities for prosperity.

“Our mission is not just to catch up with Europe but to ensure every Greek, regardless of location, benefits from the same economic opportunities,” Mitsotakis stated, calling for strong collaboration among local communities, government bodies, and mayors to develop responsive regional plans.

Quoting the American phrase “All politics is local politics,” Mitsotakis stressed that broad economic policies must translate into meaningful, local solutions. “What may seem minor at the national level can be a top priority for regional citizens,” he remarked, emphasising the importance of addressing even small-scale local concerns.

During his speech, the Prime Minister outlined key priorities, including water resource management, support for the farming sector, and addressing demographic and housing challenges affecting families. He also acknowledged the climate crisis, emphasising the need for Europe to proactively prepare for its impacts with adequate funding.

On the economic front, Mitsotakis highlighted his government’s track record of tax reductions and growth-oriented policies, noting that the 2025 budget includes 12 additional tax cuts, with further reductions planned through 2027. “We must stay on this path of economic stability, ensuring its impact is felt across the entire country,” he added.
