A fire broke out early Wednesday morning, 8 November, in the historic Church of St Athanasios in Ioannina.
The blaze, which started under unclear circumstances around 2:30 a.m., originated in the women’s balcony of the holy metropolitan cathedral.
Firefighters worked through the early hours to bring the fire under control, deploying 20 personnel and six vehicles to the scene. While the flames were extinguished, the church sustained damage from both smoke and fire.
The Church of St Athanasios, designated as a listed monument, holds significant cultural and historical value, amplifying concerns over the extent of damage. The incident was managed on-site by the commander of the 1st Fire Station of Ioannina.
A preliminary investigation is underway by the fire service to determine the cause and circumstances of the fire.
