JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon will not be joining the Trump administration, a source close to Dimon confirmed. This puts an end to recent speculation about the 68-year-old executive taking a senior government role, such as Treasury Secretary, following the 2024 US presidential election.
Despite his Greek heritage (his paternal grandfather emigrated from Greece and changed the family name from Papademetriou to Dimon), Dimon maintained his tradition of not endorsing a presidential candidate in this election cycle. However, he did frequently comment on economic, financial, and geopolitical issues. Interestingly, media reports indicated his wife, Judy Dimon, campaigned for Kamala Harris.
Dimon previously acknowledged the possibility of reconsidering a government position, but this recent confirmation solidifies his commitment to JPMorgan Chase, where the board has already identified four potential successors. In a pre-election statement, Dimon called for national unity following the divisive election.
While Dimon is out of the running, another potential candidate for Treasury Secretary is billionaire hedge fund manager and Trump donor, John Paulson. Paulson, who has expressed interest in the position, aligns with Trump's economic views, advocating for tax cuts and deregulation. Although not of Greek descent, Paulson has ties to the Greek banking sector through investments in Piraeus and Alpha Bank.
