A 30-year-old woman linked to the recent explosion in Athens’ Ambelokipi district has been remanded in custody following her testimony before the examining magistrate on Thursday.
The woman, accused of participating in a terrorist group and engaging in terrorist acts, denied involvement in any illegal activities. She was arrested at Athens International Airport earlier this week. After her testimony, both the examining magistrate and the prosecutor agreed to detain her.
Incident Overview
The explosion occurred on October 31 in a third-floor apartment where a man reportedly attempting to manufacture a bomb died. A woman present in the apartment was seriously injured and remains hospitalised under guard. Two additional suspects, including the 30-year-old, were arrested in connection with the case.
Damage Assessment
The Municipality of Athens released a report detailing extensive structural damage to the building. The blast destroyed the apartment where the explosion occurred and caused significant damage to nearby floors. According to city inspectors:
– 3rd Floor: Three apartments suffered the heaviest damage, including cracked walls and collapsed sections.
– 2nd Floor: Two apartments sustained cracked walls.
– 4th Floor: One apartment showed damage to its floors and walls.
The municipal report declared areas of the building unsafe, including all apartments on one side of the building and the central open space (‘akalyptos’) until further inspections confirm structural stability.
Local authorities continue to investigate the case to determine the full scope of the explosion’s causes and potential links to terrorist activities.
