A Qantas flight bound for Brisbane experienced an engine failure shortly after takeoff from Sydney Airport on Friday afternoon. Passengers aboard QF520 reported hearing a loud bang around 1 pm, which was later confirmed to be related to the engine issue. One passenger described seeing an engine appear to fail. The pilot informed passengers of a problem with the right-hand engine.
The Boeing 737, carrying 174 passengers, returned to Sydney Airport and landed safely. Around the same time, a grass fire broke out along the eastern side of a parallel runway. Fire and Rescue NSW reported the grass fire, while Sydney Airport confirmed the emergency landing and the fire, stating they are investigating a possible link between the two incidents. Airport fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze. While initial passenger reports mentioned an engine explosion, Qantas stated that there was an engine failure but no explosion.
