Athens hotels: Decrease in occupancy and increase in average room rate in September

According to data from the Athens—Attica and Argosaronic Hotel Association, hotel occupancy in the Greek capital decreased by 1.2% in September.

The corresponding picture of occupancy in other Mediterranean cities - competitors of Athens - is as follows: In Barcelona, occupancy decreased by 1.4%; in Madrid, it remained stable; while in Rome and Istanbul, it increased by 2.5% and 5.5%, respectively.

In terms of the average room price in September 2024 compared to 2023, Athens showed an increase of 8.1%.

In Rome and Istanbul, the average price decreased by 8.3% and 3.8%, respectively, while in Barcelona and Madrid, it increased significantly by 19.5% and 18.9%, respectively.

In the first nine months of 2024, the occupancy rate of Athens increased by 1.5% compared to the corresponding period last year.

At the same time, demand in Madrid and Istanbul increased by 4.7% and 6.6%, respectively, while demand in Rome and Barcelona did not differ.

Compared to the Mediterranean cities of Rome, Barcelona, ​​Madrid, and Istanbul, Barcelona recorded higher occupancy levels than Athens. In terms of average room price, the Greek capital remained behind despite its increase of 8.9% in the first nine months of this year.

In the same period, Madrid recorded double-digit growth of 16.3%, and Barcelona recorded a higher increase than Greece's largest city (+9.5%). Average room rate levels in Rome increased slightly, but prices were high, while Istanbul saw a decrease.
