In Rose Bay, Sydney, nearly 350 people attended the annual St. George the Minor Fathers, Kids, and Mates BBQ at St. George Greek Orthodox Church Saturday, 2nd November, 2024, raising nearly $50,000 for the church's restoration fund. The vibrant celebration of Greek Australian culture and community spirit featured authentic food, drinks, music, dancing, and laughter.
St. George Greek Orthodox Church, a war memorial commemorating both Anzacs who served in Greece and Greek Australians who served in Australia, will use the funds for ongoing restoration projects. In a gesture of solidarity, $5,000 will be donated to the North Bondi RSL Sub-Branch to support their new legal services initiative for veterans.
Organizers hailed the event a resounding success, noting a significant increase in children attending this year. A highlight of the day was the auction of marble icons of St. George donated by Olympia Marble, which raised nearly $20,000.
"The overwhelming support and outstanding turnout were truly inspiring," said Nick Andriotakis. "We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this important cause. Using our shared Greek Australian history, we aim to inform and assist the present and inspire the future."
The organizing committee thanked the dedicated volunteers who made the event possible. They also acknowledged attendee feedback and promised to incorporate suggestions for next year's BBQ. "We are committed to making this an unforgettable event year after year," said Nick Andriotakis.
