South Melbourne FC Aims for A-League as Marles and Taylor Become Joint No. 1 Ticket Holders in 2024

Melbourne, On Thursday, November 7th, South Melbourne FC held its annual inner sanctum event, honouring key members and making significant announcements regarding the club's future, including its ambition to join the A-League. The event notably featured Football Australia Chairman Anter Isaac, who stated that South Melbourne deserves a place in the top tier.

A key announcement was the appointment of Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and State Member of Parliament Nina Taylor as joint No. 1 ticket holders. South Melbourne Chairman Bill Papastergiadis praised Marles' long-standing support of the club, highlighting his attendance at crucial matches. Papastergiadis emphasized Marles' deep understanding of the club and its community, making him an ideal choice. He expressed excitement about Marles being part of the club's journey towards the new National Second Tier competition in 2025 and beyond.

Marles expressed his gratitude for the honour, calling South Melbourne "more than a football club" and a symbol of multiculturalism and immigrant success. Taylor echoed this sentiment, praising the club's inclusive programs, from all-abilities football to women's teams.

Club President Nick Maikousis reiterated South Melbourne's readiness to compete at the highest national level, whether the A-League or a strong second-tier competition. He emphasized that the club's "destiny" is in the top tier and that they will work with Football Australia to achieve this goal. Maikousis also announced the appointment of former star player David Clarkson as General Manager, strengthening the club's football operations.

The event also recognized former Ministers Martin Pakula and Martin Foley for their contributions to securing the club's 40-year lease and license for its home ground. Pakula highlighted his personal connection to the club, and Foley reiterated his strong belief that South Melbourne belongs to the A-League, calling it a "no-brainer" for Football Australia.

A screening of a documentary on legendary player Ferenc Puskás and Ange Postecoglou, featuring insights from Paul Trimboli and the film's directors, highlighted the club's rich history.
