The network announced on Sunday that Andra Day had been cast as Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, for season two of Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Day will portray Athena, the mother of Annabeth Chase (played by Leah Sava Jeffries), in the highly anticipated second season of the hit series based on Rick Riordan’s beloved book series. The Grammy Award-winning artist expressed her excitement about the role in a video statement: “I can’t wait to bring her to life and work alongside such talented actors. Stay tuned for this epic journey, y’all.”
Her casting marks the latest in a series of updates as Percy Jackson prepares for its sophomore season. Along with Day, the returning cast includes Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth, Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Aryan Simhadri as Grover, Charlie Bushnell as Luke, and Dior Goodjohn as Clarisse. New additions to the cast include Daniel Diemer, who will play Tyson, Percy’s Cyclops brother, and Tamara Smart as Thalia Grace, the demigod daughter of Zeus. The season will also feature guest appearances by Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal, and Margaret Cho as the Gray Sisters.
The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is set to premiere in 2025 and will adapt The Sea of Monsters, the second book in Riordan’s Percy Jackson series. In the new season, Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood a year after the first season’s events, only to find his world upended. His relationship with Annabeth is changing, he discovers he has a cyclops brother, Grover is missing, and the camp is under attack by the forces of Kronos. Percy’s journey to restore order will lead him to the dangerous Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits him.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians season two is executive produced by Rick Riordan alongside showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, with additional executive producers including Rebecca Riordan, Craig Silverstein, Bert Salke, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, D.J. Goldberg, James Bobin, Jim Rowe, Albert Kim, Jason Ensler, and Sarah Watson.
