The National Technical University of Athens (Athens Polytechnic) will open its gates on Friday, November 15, to mark the 51st anniversary of the student-led uprising against the dictatorship on November 17, 1973.

The commemoration will span three days, concluding with the annual march to the U.S. Embassy on Sunday.

According to NTU Rector Ioannis Chatjigeorgiou, the Patission campus will be open to the public from 09:00 to 20:00 on Friday and Saturday, and from 09:00 to 13:00 on Sunday, barring safety concerns that might necessitate an early closure. The university’s buildings will remain closed from Thursday, November 14, to Sunday, and all classes scheduled for Friday have been cancelled.

Security measures around the campus will be heightened from November 11 through November 18, and the university Senate will remain in continuous session throughout the commemorative period.

“The NTU will take all necessary steps to honour November 17 as a day of remembrance for the fighters and martyrs of the struggle against the dictatorship and as a special day recognising Greek youth,” a statement from the university read. The commemorations will include events both on the campus grounds and in its external spaces, albeit with a limited scope inside the buildings.

The Athens Polytechnic Uprising of 1973 is remembered as a pivotal moment in the resistance against Greece’s military junta, symbolising the fight for democracy and freedom.
