Residents of the apartment building on Arkadia Street in Ambelokipi, where a powerful explosion occurred on October 31, have issued a press release outlining urgent demands for state assistance.

The explosion, described as a terrorist act, caused significant damage to the building, rendering it temporarily uninhabitable.

In their statement, the residents acknowledged the immediate response of state authorities, including temporary housing, food, and support, and expressed gratitude to the Hellenic Police and Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis. However, they raised concerns about the financial and logistical burden placed on them to address the extensive damage.

The Urban Planning Department has held the building's owners and tenants responsible for securing and restoring the property, requiring specialised work under tight deadlines. Residents argue that the costs are prohibitive without state intervention. While the Minister of Citizen Protection has indicated publicly that restoration costs might be covered, no formal written commitment has been provided, leaving residents anxious and uncertain about their future.

In their press release, the residents presented three specific requests to the government:

1. Formal Assurance: Clear confirmation of the state’s financial support for restoring the building and individual apartments, including timelines and conditions.
2. Initial Safety Costs: Coverage of immediate expenses required to ensure public safety.
3. Temporary Housing Assistance: Continued provision of housing for residents until the building is deemed safe and habitable.

The residents emphasised the critical need for swift action and clear communication, urging the relevant ministries to provide detailed plans and commitments to resolve the situation.

“We thank the state for its initial support but stress the urgency of formal assurances and financial assistance to help us return to our homes,” the statement concluded.
