Garifallia, a 41-year-old woman severely beaten by her partner in Patras, passed away after sustaining critical injuries. Her family, in their grief, chose to donate her organs, offering a selfless act of love in the face of overwhelming tragedy. The perpetrator is in custody, facing charges for the violent attack.
Garifallia, who had fought for her life following the brutal attack, could not survive the severe craniocephalic injuries she sustained from a blow outside a hotel by the beach last Sunday. Despite efforts by medical staff, her condition deteriorated, and she was transferred to the KAT General Hospital in Athens, where doctors confirmed her brain death.
In an emotional statement, the family of Garifallia expressed their gratitude for the medical teams' efforts and explained their decision to donate her organs:
"After the doctors at the General Hospital of Attica KAT confirmed our daughter and sister’s brain death, we, the family of Garifallia, have chosen to donate her organs to help save the lives of others. This is our ultimate act of love for fellow human beings. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the medical and nursing staff at Agios Andreas Hospital in Patras and the General Hospital of Attica for their efforts to keep Garifallia alive and all those who have supported us during this unimaginable pain."
Garifallia's injuries were the result of a violent altercation with her partner, a 49-year-old man, who was arrested and later remanded in custody. He was taken into custody after medical tests revealed the extent of Garifallia’s injuries, including a severe brain injury and a fractured occipital bone, which led to her intubation. The following day, doctors deemed it necessary to transfer her to the KAT hospital in Athens.
The 49-year-old man, who has a history of abusing Garifallia, admitted to the attack but denied intending to cause harm. In his statement, he said, "I admit that I hit Garifallia, but I had no intention of harming her. We fought over a trivial matter, and I went to the hotel where she was staying. I did not plan for things to escalate the way they did. I didn’t punch or kick her; I only pushed her, and she fell." However, security camera footage from the hotel contradicted his account. The perpetrator is now in custody at Korydallos prison.
The tragedy has not only shocked the local community but also highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence. Garifallia’s family, despite their grief, made the selfless decision to donate her organs, potentially giving others a chance at life.
