The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure noted that foreign tourists can easily read the logo.

The Byzantine-influenced Thessaloniki Metro logo was announced in a press conference on Wednesday morning.

It was explained that the logo forms the foundation of a visual identity that aims to bridge Thessaloniki’s past, present, and future and combines its authenticity and timelessness with the Metro’s modern and innovative character.

The lowercase “μ” in a circle reminiscent of the subway tunnels captures the history of Thessaloniki and ties it to the present day through a modern means of public transportation such as the metro.

As the leadership of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructures, Christos Staikouras and Nikos Tahiaos, said, the logo can easily be read by foreign tourists.

The logo combines the past with a modern, minimal aesthetic, which is why the lowercase “μ” was chosen. It can also be read as a capital “M,” explained Chrysoula Kousteni, head of the architectural department of the Hellenic Metro.

This resulted in a simplification of the font from Byzantine manuscripts combined with modern data.
