Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Güler has announced that Turkey will proceed with the purchase of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets after overcoming Germany’s initial resistance.
In an interview with Turkish broadcaster TV100, Güler highlighted Germany’s shift in stance, crediting the diplomatic efforts of NATO allies Britain, Italy, and Spain, who are part of the Eurofighter consortium.
“Germany resisted for a long time,” Güler said, “but with the positive contribution of our NATO friends, Britain, Italy, and Spain, Germany has responded positively.”
The announcement comes as Turkey also seeks to finalise the purchase of 40 U.S.-made F-16 Viper jets. Güler described relations with the United States as “very positive,” noting that contracts for the F-16 acquisition have already been signed.
Addressing a question on Greek-Turkish relations, Güler expressed optimism about the ongoing dialogue between the two nations. He credited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for fostering a cooperative atmosphere.
“Our President has developed a very positive relationship with the Greek Prime Minister. They have taken important steps to turn the Aegean into a sea of friendship rather than hostility,” Güler stated. He also praised ongoing discussions between the Turkish and Greek foreign ministers, emphasising Turkey’s commitment to supporting this diplomatic progress.
On the Cyprus issue, Güler reiterated Turkey’s position supporting a two-state solution. He criticized the Republic of Cyprus for what he described as attempts to expand its influence, including opening military bases amid ongoing regional tensions.
“At a time when genocidal actions continue in Gaza, [Cyprus] is opening and trying to open military bases,” Güler said, warning that such actions could have unintended consequences in the future.
The decision to acquire Eurofighter Typhoons highlights Turkey’s efforts to modernize its air force while navigating complex relations with NATO allies. The deal underscores Germany’s willingness to cooperate, despite past hesitations linked to geopolitical concerns. Turkey’s concurrent focus on U.S. F-16s further signals a strategic balance between European and American defence partnerships.
