FA Investigates Reports of Tear Gas and ‘Heavy-Handed Policing’ Faced by England Fans in Greece

The Football Association (FA) and Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) are investigating claims of excessive policing tactics, including the use of tear gas, against England fans before Thursday’s Nations League match at the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

England’s U21 team, managed by Lee Carsley, secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Greece in the Group B2 encounter. However, the evening was marred by reports of fans experiencing chaotic scenes and confrontations with Greek police outside the sold-out venue.

The FA confirmed it was looking into the incidents. A spokesperson stated: “We are aware that some of our fans had a difficult experience outside the ground and are obtaining more information on exactly what happened.”

The FSA’s Free Lions Fans’ Embassy also expressed frustration on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “Unfortunately, once again, we are having to ask England supporters to send in their witness accounts… Local police used shields and tear gas to do something as simple as rearrange a queue,” the post read. The FSA added it was gathering accounts to raise the issue with UEFA and the Fans’ Europe network.

Several fans described their ordeals in Athens, criticising local authorities for their approach. Jack Loftus, from Telford, said: “They went to adjust the queue at the front to make it narrower and longer and just did it with force. They were pushing the crowd against the fence. They treat us like animals, then act like the victim if there’s retaliation.”

Jamie Murray, from Bury, highlighted logistical issues, stating: “England fans were just queuing to get in. 3,500 through one gate—it hadn’t really been thought out. FA officials were just standing watching too.”

The FSA has asked fans to email their accounts to assist in discussions with UEFA and other authorities. The organisation stressed that while England’s on-pitch performance was commendable, the treatment of fans highlighted persistent issues that need addressing to ensure safe conditions for traveling supporters.
