Athens is set to see an extensive police presence this weekend as authorities implement heightened security measures for the 51st anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising, commemorated on Sunday, November 17.

Over 5,000 police officers will be deployed across the city, focusing on key areas such as the Polytechnic, other university institutions, the U.S. embassy, public buildings, and the district of Exarchia. Special attention will also be given to the Israeli embassy and locations associated with Israeli interests, reflecting concerns over ongoing hostilities in the Middle East.

Support from the Anti-Terrorist Service and the Intelligence Service will bolster security efforts. A police helicopter and a drone will monitor the city from above, while armored water-throwing vehicles will be stationed on the streets. Armed officers will be positioned on rooftops of buildings near the Polytechnic to ensure comprehensive oversight.

Authorities will also conduct continuous pre-checks around the Polytechnic and nearby areas. Traffic regulations will be enforced, particularly on Sunday, when the commemorative events reach their peak.

A final meeting to finalize the security plan is scheduled for Friday, November 15, at the Citizens’ Protection Ministry. The annual commemorations of the 1973 student-led uprising, a pivotal moment in Greece's fight against military dictatorship, often draw large crowds and protests, necessitating robust precautionary measures.
