Turkish Warships Block Italian Research Vessel Near Kasos, Prompting Greek Naval Response

Four Turkish warships deployed between the Greek islands of Kasos and Karpathos have reportedly blocked planned operations by an Italian research vessel. This action coincided with the first violation of Greek airspace by Turkish warplanes in several months, escalating tensions in the region.

The Greek Ministry of Defense reacted by ordering crews back to their ships, with the frigates HS Hydra (F-452) and HS Navarino (F-461) reportedly prepared to deploy to the area. While Greek Navy sources confirmed the crew recalls, they characterized the activity as a “readiness exercise” and downplayed the significance of the Turkish presence. However, reports indicate that two of the four Turkish warships remain in the vicinity.

The incident has prompted criticism, with some suggesting that Greece’s recent diplomatic engagements have emboldened Turkey to act assertively in Greek waters. The apparent withdrawal of the Italian research vessel is viewed as a setback for Greece.

Adding to the tension, the Hellenic Air Force reported four violations of Greek airspace by a Turkish electronic warfare aircraft, a UAV, and two helicopters. These violations occurred in the southeastern Aegean, the same area where the Turkish warships are operating.

The status of the Italian research vessel and the specific nature of its mission remain unconfirmed.
