One of the most popular coffees in Greece, the cappuccino, has become a bitter pill to swallow, as its price is disproportionately high compared to consumers’ income.
According to research from the online platform Numbeo (a global database of consumer prices), a cappuccino in Athens costs €3.83.
While Athens ranks 56th in the EU on a list of cappuccino prices in 166 European cities, the price of €3.83 is similar to that in countries with much higher average incomes, such as Belgium or Germany.
For example, in Antwerp, a cappuccino costs €3.84, while the average monthly income in Belgium is around €3,900. In Stuttgart, a cappuccino costs €3.82, and the average monthly income in Germany is about €3,500.
The average monthly salary in Greece is close to €2,000, almost half that of Belgium and Germany.
Therefore, if one assumes that a Greek person drinks at least one cappuccino daily, they spend €115 each month, representing 5.75% of their income. In contrast, a German, consuming one cappuccino per day, spends approximately 3.3% of their income.
