Weather Update for Greece: Snow and Rain Expected

Significant weather changes are on the horizon for Greece, with snow and rain expected in several regions. According to meteorological models, two atmospheric disturbances will affect the country's weather in the coming days, causing varying conditions across different areas.

Snowfall and Rain on Saturday (23/11):
- The U.S.-based GFS forecast indicates snow will primarily affect northwestern Greece on Saturday.
- Snowfall is also possible in the northeastern Aegean islands, particularly focusing on Lemnos.
- Following this, cold air masses are predicted to move toward Turkey.

Two Disturbances in Quick Succession:
Thodoris Kolydas, director of Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY), highlights the impact of two successive weather systems:
1. First Disturbance: From Wednesday to Thursday, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and strong southerly winds.
2. Second Disturbance: From Friday to Saturday, intensifying the rain and introducing snowfall in mountainous regions.

The expected conditions will result in heavy rainfall across western and northern Greece, as well as the eastern Aegean. However, Kolydas cautions against misusing the term "P-weather" often popularized by media. He explains that “P-weather” refers to a specific weather type caused by W-SW currents over Greece, influenced by the region’s topography and the Aegean Sea.

Today’s Weather (Wednesday, 20/11):
- Rain and Dust: Rainfall is expected across many areas, including muddy showers in the southern parts of the country due to African dust transport.
- Regional Details:
- Western Greece, Thrace, Eastern Aegean: Cloudy with moderate rain.
- Cyclades and Crete: Light, scattered showers, intensifying in the evening in western regions, with thunderstorms in northern Ionian and Epirus.
- Elsewhere: Partly cloudy skies.
- Temperatures:
- 17–20°C in northern regions, 19–21°C in the west, and up to 22°C in eastern Greece and the Aegean. These are 4–5°C higher than average for November.
- Winds: Southwest winds reaching 5–7 Beaufort in the Ionian and Aegean Seas.

Local Updates:
- Athens (Attica): Predominantly sunny with some clouds in the evening. Maximum temperature around 21°C. Winds from the southwest at 3–5 Beaufort in surrounding seas.
- Thessaloniki: Partly cloudy conditions with a high of 19°C. Winds light, shifting to the south by afternoon (2–3 Beaufort).
