ATHENS, Greece (GCT) — Greek police seized a cache of explosives and weapons during a search of an apartment building storage area in Athens on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. The discovery included nearly 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of explosives such as ammonium nitrate, TNT, and ammonium dynamite, along with 25 detonators, gunpowder, and a slow-burning fuse. Police also confiscated a submachine gun, six firearms, a fake license plate, and a laptop. The police’s Special Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the case.
This raid comes approximately two weeks after a series of raids targeting a suspected criminal weapons network in Athens. Those raids yielded a large quantity of explosives and firearms. Authorities have not yet determined whether the two cases are connected.
Greece has a history of both organized crime and extremist groups engaging in violence, including bombings and targeted killings. Earlier this month, an explosion in a central Athens apartment killed a man and seriously injured a woman. Authorities linked that incident to individuals allegedly attempting to form a new domestic terrorist group. While major extremist groups responsible for past attacks have been dismantled, smaller, less active groups still exist.
