On November 21, 2024, the judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif. The warrants were issued in connection with alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed between October 8, 2023, and May 20, 2024.
In its statement, the Hague-based ICC cited “reasonable grounds” to believe that Netanyahu, Gallant, and Deif held “criminal responsibility” for these alleged crimes during the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Both the Israeli government and Hamas have dismissed these allegations.
The warrant for Mohammed Deif was issued despite reports from the Israeli military claiming his death in a July airstrike in Gaza. Further updates on the situation are expected to follow.
