The political stage in Greece is set for a significant shakeup as Stefanos Kasselakis prepares to unveil his new political party.

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 12:00 pm, Kasselakis will present the founding declaration at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, marking the formal launch of his movement.

During the event, the party's name—chosen through a vote by its members—will be revealed.

The timing of this announcement is strategic, coming just one day before SYRIZA’s internal election for a new party president on Sunday, November 24. The proximity of these events has stirred debate, with some viewing it as a bold political maneuver.

Independent MP Alexandros Avlonitis, a close collaborator of Kasselakis, dismissed concerns that the date was intended to undercut SYRIZA. Speaking to Proto Program 91.6, Avlonitis countered, “Was it a hit below the belt when the extraordinary PASOK congress coincided with their internal elections? It’s a rhetorical question.”

Avlonitis revealed logistical hurdles in securing venues such as the Zappeion Hall, explaining that permits are typically reserved for established parties. He refrained from commenting on how many SYRIZA MPs might join the new party but hinted at potential defections once the movement is officially formed.

The party’s emphasis on grassroots involvement is reflected in its democratic approach to choosing its name. Kasselakis has invited members of the public to submit suggestions, emphasising themes of “participation” and “American-style democracy.” According to Avlonitis, around 18 to 20 potential names are currently under consideration, with a final decision to be made via an online vote.

Speculation Over Parliamentary Group Formation

Regarding the possibility of forming a parliamentary group, Avlonitis said discussions with SYRIZA MPs are ongoing. “A number of those remaining in SYRIZA under special conditions may become independent and join the new party once the process is complete,” he stated. However, he acknowledged procedural hurdles, such as the need for at least 10 MPs to form a group under parliamentary rules.

Call for Public Engagement

The movement’s website, www.todikomaskinima.gr, invites citizens to register as members, contribute ideas, and shape the party’s program. Kasselakis has used social media to amplify this call, encouraging public input on the party’s direction, priorities, and even its name.

With the founding declaration just days away, anticipation is mounting. Kasselakis’s move signals a new chapter in Greek politics.
