A 19-year-old man accused of killing a 5-year-old boy in Markopoulo has been placed in pre-trial detention following a joint decision by the prosecutor and the investigating judge.

The suspect, brought before judicial authorities, admitted to firing at the car but denied responsibility for the child’s death.

The tragic incident occurred when a bullet pierced the rear window of a car, fatally striking the child in the head. Relatives rushed the injured boy to the Markopoulo Health Centre, and he was later transferred to the "Aglaia Kyriakou" Children's Hospital. Despite efforts, doctors were unable to revive him.

A History of Feuds

Police believe the shooting stems from a long-standing feud within the Roma community, dating back to 2020. The child’s father, recently released from prison after serving time for a drug-related conviction, was reportedly the intended target. Investigators suggest that rivals, aware of his release, orchestrated the attack.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence, with similar cases recorded in Agios Panteleimonas in 2019, Koropi in 2021, and another shooting in 2022.
