Israeli Energy Minister Cancels Athens Trip Due to Cabinet Meeting on Hezbollah

Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen, previously the foreign minister as of November 2023, canceled his planned visit to Athens set for Tuesday. The trip was intended for the signing of a bilateral energy agreement with Greek Energy Minister Theodoros Skylakakis.

The cancelation was communicated to Athens late last night, with the Israeli side citing the need for Cohen's presence at a critical cabinet meeting on the ceasefire with Hezbollah scheduled for the same day.

As of now, it remains uncertain when the visit will be rescheduled. The agreement was anticipated to address the Greece-Cyprus-Israel electrical interconnection project, known as the Great Sea Interconnector, which has been delayed due to the slow progress on the Crete-Cyprus segment.

Additionally, the agreement was expected to cover a broad spectrum of energy collaborations, including renewable energy sources, energy storage, and hydrogen projects. According to sources from Kathimerini, the initiative for this agreement originated from the Israeli side.
