A magical path to the waterfall of Agia Varvara

Share

In the heart of mountainous Drama, hidden among dense vegetation, is one of the region's most impressive natural treasures: the waterfall of Agia Varvara.

You can start your way to the Agia Varvara waterfall from Paranesti, heading north towards Arkoudorema, with the valuable accompaniment of the experienced Sofia Kementzetzidou.

After 7 kilometres, at the intersection of Prasinada, we followed the straight road to Dipotama. At 6 kilometres, a turn to the right brought us to the trailhead.

Leaving the car on the public road just before the settlement of Dipotami, a simple but clear sign showed us the beginning of the path. We crossed a small bridge and began our uphill journey.

The path, easy and accessible, stretches for about 1.5 km in total, including the return.

The sounds of deer

As we progressed, nature revealed its secrets to us. We passed outside an abandoned cafe, a silent witness to the passing of time. The waters of the stream flowed calmly, with only a few spots testifying to their power.

At some points, our ears were filled with the sounds of wildlife as we heard the distinctive calls of deer, adding a touch of mystery to our adventure.

Suddenly, a friendly dog appeared out of nowhere, determined to be our guide on this short walking trail.

With our four-legged companion leading the way, we continued our journey towards the imposing waterfall.

With a height of 15 metres

The waterfall of Agia Varvara, with a height of more than 15 metres, stands proudly, surrounded by lush vegetation of alder and oak trees. Its waters, coming from the stream of Varvara, form a small lake at its base.

Here, nature creates a small ecosystem, hosting trout, freshwater crabs, water snakes and colourful dragonflies.

The Forest Service designed the area as a recreation area, offering an escape option for nature lovers, families, and day-trippers.

From the top of the waterfall, the view towards the lake is magnificent, offering unique opportunities for panoramic photos. The sculpted rocks create a unique image, which is also worth seeing from their upper side.

Upon reaching the waterfall, you will need to follow a left course, and thus, you will find yourself at its high point.

As our day drew to a close, our faithful guide dog escorted us back to our starting point. Saying goodbye to this little miracle of nature, we felt grateful for the experience and renewed by contact with the wild beauty of mountainous Drama.

The waterfall of Agia Varvara remains a treasure, ready to enchant any visitor who dares to explore the area's beauties.
