They might prefer to enjoy the dish rather than struggle with its pronunciation. This is true for FAGE yogurt, which is available on supermarket shelves abroad but can be tricky for non-Greek speakers to pronounce correctly.
To help with this, the EAT UK Instagram account has clarified the pronunciation in its name – it says "EAT (pronounced FA-YEH!) Strained Yoghurt."
But what is the origin of the name? What does EAT mean?
According to the company's website, even though their business began in 1926, the name FAGE was adopted in the 1970s.
"We named our yogurt FAGE, which in Greek is the imperative of the verb 'to eat'." The National Herald adds that the name has a second meaning.
The word FAGE in Greek ("fa-yeh") might derive from "to eat," but the brand’s initials also stand for F.A.G.E., or Filippou Brothers Dairy Enterprises. Why is FAGE yogurt so thick?
Their website states that this thickness results from their "unique straining process that removes the watery whey and gives that thick, velvety texture." The paper, rather than plastic, inner covering on the yogurt helps absorb even more liquid, pale yellow whey.
