During the construction of Athens' new Metro Line 4, archaeologists have uncovered a 22-meter section of an ancient road from the 4th century BCE at the University of Athens campus. With plans for its preservation and future relocation, this find offers insights into the historical Potamos municipality near Mount Ymittos.
The road was found at the University of Athens campus in Kaisariani, providing insights into the ancient Potamos municipality near Mount Ymittos. With approval from Greece’s Central Archaeological Council (KAS), the road will be temporarily removed and later reinstalled above the Panepistimioupoli metro station after construction is finished.
Spanning from the Classical to the Roman periods, this road is the first archaeological artifact from Line 4 designated for preservation and relocation. Other discoveries along the line, located near Akadimia, Kypseli, Exarchia, and Zografou, were not deemed significant enough for similar measures.
Metro officials have stated that the relocation will not cause major delays in the project timeline. The station was initially planned to be situated in central Kaisariani at the Near East Stadium. However, local officials raised concerns in 2017 about potential traffic and parking issues, leading to its repositioning to the university campus.
