Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways have received interim approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for a cooperative alliance, offering a new travel option to Europe for tech executives and other travelers currently facing high Qantas fares or service issues with British Airways. The alliance allows the airlines to begin marketing and selling tickets for 28 weekly return flights between Doha and four Australian cities: Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. These flights, operated by Qatar Airways aircraft and crew (a "wetlease" arrangement), are expected to commence in June 2025 for Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, with Perth following in November 2025.

While awaiting final regulatory approval, the ACCC has accepted a court-enforceable undertaking from the airlines to protect consumers. If the alliance isn't fully approved, passengers will receive refunds or alternative flights at no extra cost. This consumer protection measure was key to the ACCC's decision to allow advance ticket sales.

The ACCC is currently reviewing potential public benefits, such as increased capacity and enhanced services, and weighing them against potential detriments. Concerns raised by interested parties, specifically regarding the wetlease arrangement and exclusivity between Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways, are being carefully considered. The ACCC plans to release a draft determination in February 2025. The airlines are seeking a five-year authorization.

Existing Velocity member benefits with Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, and Virgin Atlantic will remain unchanged. More information is available on the ACCC website.
