Rhodes devastated by unprecedented rainfall from Storm Bora. Traffic ban in effect due to extensive road damage. More rain expected
Rhodes, Greece (December 1, 2024) - A traffic ban is in effect across Rhodes island following torrential downpours brought by Storm Bora, which devastated parts of the island and tragically claimed two lives on Lemnos Saturday. The storm, which swept across Greece over the weekend, caused unprecedented rainfall and widespread damage to Rhodes' road network.
South Aegean Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos described the situation on the island as "devastating and deeply shocking." He told reporters Sunday morning that residents are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the storm. "The people of Rhodes are reeling from what occurred on Saturday," Hatzimarkos said.
The traffic ban was implemented due to the extensive destruction of roads, with large sections rendered completely impassable. Authorities are concerned about further damage as the storm is expected to re-intensify and bring more heavy rainfall from midday Sunday.
According to Hatzimarkos, the level of rainfall is unprecedented in the South Aegean region. "We have never recorded such rainfall before," he stated, emphasizing the severity of the situation. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, and recovery efforts are expected to be challenging.
