Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou announced that Greece will install 1,000 traffic cameras across the country by the summer of 2025. The first 388 cameras will be placed in the Attica region at high-risk junctions, with the goal of improving road safety. The new system will also allow fines to be sent directly to offenders' mobile phones, along with a digital platform for submitting objections.
Speaking in an interview with SKAI TV, Papastergiou highlighted the importance of the cameras in improving road safety.
"The cameras are coming to cover a gap that exists, and it is shameful for a state with brand new motorways that there are two people killed every day in our country—not on the motorways, but in the cities," he stated.
Papastergiou explained that the first 388 cameras will be installed in the Attica region, where the tender process has already been completed. These cameras will be placed at high-risk junctions identified by the Hellenic Police due to frequent accidents. The installation of these cameras is set to begin in the summer of 2025.
The minister further outlined that the initiative is part of a broader plan to install an additional 1,000 cameras across Greece. If the tender process runs smoothly, the goal is to have the traffic camera system fully operational by the summer of 2025. The new system will include a single platform that will allow fines to be sent directly to offenders’ mobile phones, with an option for digital submission of objections to the fines.
